Voices

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I was out for a walk the other night and found myself pausing every few blocks to admire the clouds at sunset.

Shades of pink, orange and red in breathtaking patterns across the sky.

Almost speaking to me, as if to say, "It's time to pause...just breathe."

Yes, I admit it....sometimes I hear voices in the sky.

And in my head.

And from my friends and family.

And from my work and the never-ending logistics of life.

Even from people who don't have any business telling me what to do.

There are an awful lot of voices for us to listen to, aren't there?

How do we know which ones to trust?

More importantly, how do we know when to trust our own?

All of these voices, competing for our time and energy can be exhausting. And it's difficult sometimes to find our own voice above the noise.

To set boundaries and say no to the things that don't add value to our lives.

To put experiences and people we love ahead of perceived obligations.

To advocate for our joy and happiness.

I'm seeing too much of this lately, too many friends who are struggling with all of the voices in life pulling them in too many directions.

Too many people who aren't taking the time to listen to their own voice and pause and go for that walk and enjoy the sunset.

It takes courage and intention, but it can be done.

It's okay to not do it all. In fact, I think that's the secret to being happy.

We only have so many days on this earth; I'm feeling that more profoundly with every passing year.

Only so many days to experience life and spend time with the people we love.

Choose which voices you listen to carefully.

Trust your own and have the courage to be your own best advocate.

And if the sky decides to speak to you on a warm summer evening...

Pause and listen to it.
