Views From an Airplane Window

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I love the views from an airplane window.

I have a few dozen pictures of them from the trips I've taken over the years.

The way the sky shifts and changes on the journey is what gets me.

It's mesmerizing how the clouds can be so dense and then turn light and wispy.

Sometimes they even disappear, leaving behind a bright, blue sky.

I'm amused by the cities that grow smaller as we ascend, and the tiny cars that remind me of the toys my boys used to play with when they were little.

The contrasting colors on the plane's wing against the vibrant sky make me smile.

It reminds me just how beautiful our world can be.

And what a miracle it is that we can travel this way!

30,000 feet above the earth, literally in the clouds.

I'm so grateful that I'm in a place where I can travel as much as I do.

Grateful for the results of the hard work I've put into my career and the way my boys are growing into amazing young men.

It hasn't been an easy road.

Parenting is tough.

Building a career is tough.

Owning a home and running a household is tough.

Managing friendships and family dynamics is tough.

And I'm not alone.

It's not easy for any of us.

Don't be fooled by the beautiful images you see on social media. Behind the smiling faces are the struggles we try so hard to hide.

Sometimes, when I'm sitting on a plane looking out the window, I wonder what the traveler on the other side of the plane is seeing.

It's the same sky, but the view from their window is different.

I'm humbled by the thought of billions of people on this earth all seeing life from their own unique points of view.

It's pretty magnificent if you stop and think about it.

Next time you're up in an airplane, spend a few minutes taking in the view through the window.

Forget about all of the life stuff that you're dealing with.

Take in the clouds, the sky, the tiny houses, and the cars that disappear from view as you climb.

Think about all of the things that you are grateful for.

The places you've been to and the people you've met.

The challenges that have shaped you, and made you stronger.

The opportunities and choices you've made that brought you to where you are today.

Pause and take a deep breath.

Let yourself relax.

Remind yourself that it's a breathtaking, heart-wrenching, beautiful, challenging, perfectly imperfect life we live.

And enjoy the view.
