Victory!

It landed on the function key.

I stared for a minute. Shocked and relieved.

That damn fly had been buzzing around my head for the better part of an hour last week while I was writing my blog.

And for several weeks before that, I had been chasing it around my house with a fly swatter. But it got away every single time.

Not this time though.

What finally did the trick, you ask?

Picture this:

Me...on my couch, laptop balanced on my lap, cat sitting next to me, sleeping peacefully.

Also me, waving my hand every two minutes to swat at this fly that kept buzzing around my head.

Then me, clapping my hands in frustration at this same fly, wanting desperately for it to go away.

Suddenly, the buzzing stopped.

Then there was me, staring in shock as I looked down at my keyboard.

Victory! I'm pretty sure I whooped in excitement.

Sometimes it's the little things that bring us joy, right?

I took a picture of the dead fly to remind me of that moment. As small it may seem, it was an accomplishment for me that day.

I had solved that problem. And it felt good!

There are so many little annoyances in life, buzzing around our heads.

We let them distract us from our true focus and cloud our mood.

But if we keep trying to work through them, keep trying to swat them away, we'll eventually succeed.

And each time we do, our confidence grows that we can power through all of the sh*t that life throws at us.

I enjoyed that quiet for several hours last Sunday. Finished last week's blog post in silence and moved on with my day.

Until the next day...

I was sitting at my desk in my home office. Minding my business, getting my work done.

Then I heard it. The quiet buzzing of a fly, getting louder as it approached.

It circled my head.

I swear it was mocking me...coming to avenge its brother or sister whose life I had taken.

It's never ending. These little distractions and annoyances.

I think what we have to remember is that they come with the territory of being human.

All we can do is keep our hands at the ready and our wits about us.

And celebrate those victories when we have them.
