Tiny Things

I love tiny things.

Miniature notepads, kitchen utensils, shampoo bottles, bars of soap.

They're just so cute.

In a way, they remind me of how adorable life can be.

For my birthday last year, my boyfriend got me an assortment of tiny things.

One of the gifts was a miniature Battleship game.

I finally tried to play it this weekend when my 8-year-old niece was over.

And you know what I figured out?

Some things aren't so useful when they are tiny.

My fingers were too big to put the ships in place or insert the pegs.

I had to use a tweezers.

And even then, if the pegs were next to each other, the tweezers knocked the other pegs out and I had to keep putting them back.

Super frustrating!

We gave up after she sank my battleship, even though there were three other ships still standing.

But it taught me something.

Those tiny things are fun to hold and to admire.

They make me smile.

But in life, sometimes bigger is better.

Games that are big enough for our grown-up fingers to play.

Shampoo bottles with enough shampoo in them for a week-long vacation.

A spatula that is big enough to flip a full-size burger on the grill.

And a coffee mug that holds enough coffee to wake me up in the morning.

(Who am I kidding - I never use tiny coffee mugs!)

We are meant to live life in a big way.

And that requires the tools we use to be life-size.

I let my niece take the little Battleship game home with her.

Her fingers are still small enough to play it.

Don't get me wrong - I love my collection of tiny things.

They serve a purpose - especially when I just need to flip one egg in the morning.

Or go on a two-day trip.

But for the rest of life?

I'm going to live it to the fullest.

In the largest way possible.
