Through the Trees

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

Sometimes it can be hard to see the sun shining through the trees.

But other times, it's right there.

So clear in front of you that you wonder how you could have missed it before.

I took this picture on a golf outing with my family last fall.

It was a sunny, October day. Warmer than typical years, and the day was filled with laughter.

There was a moment on the course where I looked over toward the trees (probably to try to see where my ball went).

The sun was framed perfectly in the gap. Shining brightly through it, almost as if to say "Trees? What trees? There are no obstacles here!"

There have been a lot of new obstacles in my path lately. Ones that I keep falling over, and reminders of my mortality appearing in all sorts of ways.

Moments where I just can't understand why life keeps slinging the sh*t. Moments where it's been really hard to see the light through what feels like a very dense forest.

But today, this picture reminds me of the simple beauty of life.

It reminds me that, no matter how thick the forest might seem, there's always light.

It reminds me that life is full of infinite possibilities.

A few of these recent obstacles might just change my life and how I live it.

But maybe it's time to make some changes. Maybe it's time for me to re-evaluate my path and where I'm headed.

Time to step back and remember the things that are most important.

One of my favorite blog posts is the one I wrote about 11:11 and the wishes we make.

In that post, I wished a lot of things for all of us.

One of them being the courage to make the changes we know we should make. To bring more passion and enjoyment into this fragile life we live.

To be our truest selves.

I still wish all of those things for you.

And today, I have wishes to add.

  • I wish for you to always see the light through the trees.

  • I wish for you to feel the warmth of possibility as it shines on your face.

  • I wish for you to let it brighten your day and help you breathe again.

It's there.

Look closely.
