Things in Places They Don't Belong

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

On Friday after work, when I logged off and walked into my bathroom, this is what I saw.

The empty bowl from my breakfast of yogurt and blueberries, and an uneaten banana.

On the bathroom counter.

Seriously? Those don't belong there!

I try to batch my errands for efficiency, even inside the house.

I'm sure I was heading to the kitchen to put my bowl away when I needed to make a pit stop.

So I figured - why walk all the way downstairs when the bathroom is right there?

And then of course, I got to thinking about that work email I needed to send, walked right back to my office, and forgot all about that bowl and that banana.

Yesterday, on our drive home from the movie, I asked Jacob to look for something in my glove box.

That turned into an adventure.

Six pairs of gloves, two obsolete charger cords, and a stapler later, he didn't find what I was looking for. But we had a good laugh.

A stapler? That doesn't belong there!

Now you're getting a glimpse into my actual life. Messy and sometimes very random.

I often get comments from people that they are amazed at how lucky I am, how I seem to have it all together.

The truth is...I don't always.

My life is just as random and chaotic as the next person.

And lots of times there are things in places they don't belong.

But I actually think that's part of what makes life so beautiful.

How can we open our minds and our hearts to the possibilities that are everywhere around us if things are always where they are "supposed" to be?

Who says that bananas shouldn't be on the bathroom counter?

Well, okay, you got me on that one, but you see my point.

Life is imperfect and fast-paced and messy.

There isn't always time to stop and make sure everything is in it's place, perfectly lined up and orderly.

I say let's laugh when we find things in places they don't belong.

And sometimes leave them there for awhile.

Let them be a reminder of this messy, chaotic, so very short journey we are on.

Except the bananas of course.

Those we should always put away 😉
