The Swirl

I have a lot of interesting photos.

Snapshots of ordinary (and not so ordinary) moments.
Mostly because there are so many times in life where I feel like there's a blog post waiting to happen.
It's fun to peruse them on Sunday mornings, looking for the one that speaks to me to write about.
This morning, I came across a picture I took after getting out of the tub one night.
As I was drying off, I heard that weird noise the water makes as it starts to go faster and faster down the drain.
I turned around to watch, mesmerized by the swirling water.
And I snapped a picture of it at just the right moment.
The swirl.
That's a pretty appropriate term for how life can be a lot of the time.
This maddening swirl of stuff that we can't seem to slow down.
Our lives are like that tub full of water. There's not an infinite amount of it.
And as the water level gets lower, the pace gets faster.
More and more information is thrown at us, there are so many decisions to make, people to take care of, challenges to overcome.
And we watch, mesmerized as the swirl takes us closer and closer to empty.
I think the important thing to remember is that we do have a certain amount of control over the speed of the swirl.
Even when it doesn't feel like it.
There's a lever in the tub that we can lift that stops the water from draining entirely if we choose to lift it.
Now in life, we don't specifically have a lever to slow things down.
But we can choose to take more time not engaging in the chaos of it.
More time in silence, resting and relaxing.
More time with the people we love, laughing and reminiscing.
More time reflecting on all of the things that we are grateful for and that make us proud.
There's so much beauty we miss when we move too fast.
Like that tub full of water, our lives are full of moments and memories.
Some good, some not so good.
But all a part of who we are.
All swirling together on this amazing journey.
This beautiful, crazy, imperfect life.
Don't forget to pause and enjoy it!
