The Sh*t We Step In

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I love to be barefoot.

Free.

Unencumbered.

Toes exposed to the world.

Since I work from home, I rarely wear shoes during the day.

Even when I go get my mail, or hang out on my back patio.

But...

Sometimes being barefoot leaves me vulnerable.

To stepping in (and on) things that can hurt or cause me emotional pain.

When the kids were little, it used to be legos. Man, those hurt!

Now it's more likely a cap off of a water bottle, or a random pen that my cat knocked off the counter.

But sometimes, it's a lot worse.

Sometimes it's actual sh*t that I step in.

True story.

A couple weeks ago, my neighbors were putting up a new fence. The crew was there staking the border.

I walked out my back door and headed to the corner of my lot. I wanted to check with them and make sure they had it staked so it wasn't on my property.

I got about 10 steps away from the guy when I stepped in something warm...and squishy.

Yes, I was barefoot. And yes, it was a gift the neighbor's dog had left for me.

In my yard.

Hence the need for them to put up a fence, right?

Needless to say, I was pretty grossed out.

But I was proud of myself for holding it together long enough to confirm that the fence was, indeed, properly spaced from my lot line.

I walked slowly away from him, doing my best to wipe off as much of the crap as I could on the grass along the way.

Then I ran, to the hose in the front yard so I could douse my foot with a good long spray of cold water to get it all off.

EEEEEEEWWWWW!!!!!

But hey, sometimes in life we step in sh*t.

Sometimes there are big, warm piles of it just waiting for us when we put ourselves out there.

But most of the time, showing our true selves (our bare feet) to the world is a freeing, amazing experience.

I'm not going to let one little pile of sh*t force me to wear shoes all the time.

What fun would that be?

I am pretty glad they put up that fence though 😉
