The Paths We Take

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

One of my favorite things to do is hike through the woods. In our state or national parks, or even the little local parks near my house.

There's something so peaceful about being surrounded by trees and nature.

The freshness in the air.

The way the sunlight filters through the trees.

The sounds of birds and the wind softly blowing the leaves.

And what's even better - there are so many different paths to take!

Some paths are straight, and you can see what's ahead of you and have an idea of what to expect.

Others have curves and bends and you can't quite tell what's up ahead. There could be a steep incline, a gentle curve, or a dead end.

The best part about it is that you can go down one path, and if it doesn't take you where you want to be, you have a choice.

You can take a different path.

Explore the ones with the steep inclines and high elevation gains that take you to the vistas where you see for miles.

Meander down the smoother path that opens up to a lake where people are jumping off of ropes that hang from the trees.

Then make your way back to that path that looked so interesting, with the dark shadows and the trees that bent in funny angles.

They are all great options, all ways to enjoy and experience life.

Sometimes though, we question the paths we take.

We look back and wonder.

What would our lives look like if we had chosen different paths?

I find that happens more now as I've gotten older.

But I also believe that the paths we take in life are our paths for a reason.

I think about the people, places, and experiences I wouldn't have known if I hadn't taken the paths I did.

We can go down a million different paths in our lifetimes, Each one teaching us something new, and adding to our lives in its own way.

And we are touching other people's lives along those paths too, sometimes without even realizing it.

You've heard me say that life is perfectly imperfect.

So are the paths we take to live it.

Learn from them.

Soak in all of the new experiences.

Love the people you meet along the way.

Adjust course and take a different path as many times as you feel like it.

There's no going back, but there's an amazing journey ahead.

Enjoy it!
