The Hand We Are Dealt

A single playing card.

Face down in the grass.

I wondered what it was.

An ace maybe?

The queen of hearts?

If I had this card in my hand at the poker table, would it help me win?

It ended up being the eight of diamonds.

A decent card if I already had a seven in my hand and the dealer flopped a six, nine and a ten.

But a not so great card if the dealer flopped a king, queen and a jack.

Life can be a lot like a game of poker.

We are dealt a starting hand every day and then we hope for cards that set us up for the win.

Sometimes we get them.

Sometimes we don't.

Knowing when to raise the stakes and when to fold is critical. And not always easy.

We're going to make mistakes and stay in when we have very very little chance of winning.

We're also going to have days where we are dealt a fantastic hand and we come out ahead.

Hold on to those moments when the cards are good. They bring us strength for the times when all we can do is fold our hand and call it a day.

Life is a long game.

If we're thoughtful and smart about how we play it, we'll win more often than we lose.

I think our only real option is to play the hell out of the cards we're dealt. No matter what they look like.

I'm all in. Who's with me?
