Thanksgiving in a Box

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I picked it up Thanksgiving morning.

One large cardboard box.

Filled with everything we needed to have a Thanksgiving feast.

A few hours later, after warming the turkey and all of the other goodies, we sat down together and had a wonderful meal.

Easy.

Simple.

Stress-free.

How holidays should be.

I spent so many years of my life worrying about making everything perfect.

Now I look back and shake my head at all of the wasted hours of worry. Hours that I could have spent laughing and enjoying life.

I think though, when you are in the thick of it, when the kids are small, when you haven't yet had enough life experience, it's difficult to have perspective.

To see how little those things really matter.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old(er).

There's irony in that, you know.

In the fact that as you age, you gain perspective and have the capacity to enjoy life with a newfound kind of freedom, but you have less years to live it.

Anyway, I wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self to stop sweating the small stuff.

That the boys are going to turn into amazing young men, even though right now you can't get them to stop throwing things at each other.

(Well...they still do that when they are older, but it's funnier now.)

That your career will even out and you'll end up with just the right balance of work and play.

That holidays can be just as beautiful (even more so actually) when you sit and enjoy a glass of wine and catch up with family instead of hover over the oven all day.

But I can't.

And maybe that's okay too.

Maybe the tough times have to be experienced for us to appreciate how good the good times can be.

This year, I'm grateful for the stress-free Thanksgiving we had.

For the great food, the smiles and the laughter around the table.

It doesn't matter how it came together.

It matters that it happened.

Thanksgiving in a box.

So worth it.
