Stuck

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

She scrambled across the dining room table.

Frantically trying to get it unstuck.

I caught this picture just before she fell back into the chair, tumbled onto the floor, and the container finally came off of her head.

It was pretty hilarious.

My cat (Firefly) is a foodie. I have to be careful what we leave out in the kitchen.

I had left the container on the table and she jumped up when I wasn't looking. Then proceeded to stick her head in it and lick the remnants of cottage cheese from inside of it.

When I saw her, I yelled at her and she got scared. She flipped her head up and somehow the container got stuck.

I wish I would have gotten it on video. But it happened so fast, I didn't have much time to think.

After it was over, and I checked to make sure she was okay, I took a minute to laugh just a little bit longer.

And I thought about all of the ways that we can get stuck in life.

(Hopefully not too often with containers on our heads!)

We get stuck in a lot of different ways:

  • Stuck in jobs we don't enjoy

  • Stuck in relationships that don't make us happy

  • Stuck doing things we didn't really want to do

  • Stuck trying to figure out the answers to tough problems

It's not fun when we feel stuck, either.

It can be hard to see clearly, and even rob us of the ability to enjoy all of the other good things in our lives.

Getting unstuck is hard though.

There's truth in that old saying, "stuck between a rock and a hard place."

Neither option is easy.

But we have two choices.

We can stay stuck.

Or we can do the work to get unstuck.

Sometimes that looks like flailing around like my cat did, taking a tumble, and hitting the floor so the thing that's stuck finally comes loose.

Other times, it means making a plan, having tough conversations, setting personal boundaries, or leaning on people around us to brainstorm ways to solve those tough problems.

I say take the chance and do the work.

Because staying stuck is no fun at all.

Just ask Firefly.
