Sometimes Things Explode

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

A microwave with the door open and a bowl of soup that has exploded in it.
Soup explosion in the microwave!

Creamy chicken and potato soup.

One of my favorites on a cold, winter day.

Add a few crackers to dip into it and you've got comfort food at its best.

Except when it explodes in the microwave.

Then it's a mess to clean up.

And a disappointing half bowl of soup left to eat.

But that's how life goes, right?

Sometimes things explode.

Soup.

The pile of stuff to do at work.

Our tempers.

That bottle of wine we forgot we put in the freezer (read about that here).

With so much going on in this crazy world, messes are bound to happen.

If the mess was something out of our control, it's usually best not to dwell on it.

Just clean up the microwave and open a new can of soup.

But what if it's a mess we could have prevented?

What if it's a mess that affected other people?

What if our temper exploded or we made a rash decision or we overreacted and said things we couldn't take back?

That's happened to all of us a time or two I'm sure.

In those cases, just mopping up the spill and walking away isn't enough.

We have to own our mess.

Acknowledge it.

And try to make it right.

I believe that most human beings are inherently good people. Even now, in the midst of all of the drama and the terrible things that the media pushes at us every day.

I just think we are over-stimulated.

Life is moving so fast, there's too much technology, too much change, too much stress and we aren't wired to deal with all of this at once.

Sometimes we don't even know we are triggered until it's too late.

And then the explosion happens.

If we don't clean up those kinds of messes, they'll build on each other.

People aren't like microwaves.

The mess doesn't wipe away so easily.

We need to own up, give a heartfelt apology and figure out how to slow ourselves down enough to not let it happen again.

Be brave and courageous and willing to admit we are human.

Cleaning up that bowl of soup sounds pretty easy in comparison, doesn't it?

Next time I make soup, I think I'll put a lid on it.

That should keep it from exploding and making a mess.

Hmmm...

Maybe that same strategy can work in other areas of my life too.

I'll give it a try.

Just give me a minute to clean out this microwave first.
