There are moments when life kicks us in the pants.
Or the face. Or wherever it's going to hurt the most that day.
Sometimes it's all just too much.
Too many crappy things happening at once.
Too many decisions to make.
Too many people depending on us.
Too much uncertainty and fear.
And sometimes, we feel very alone trying to navigate it all.
Most of us have had more than our fair share of those moments this past year.
I think back to a morning a few years ago in my old apartment. I had made my coffee and went to sit on the patio to relax and breathe and brace myself for my day.
From inside the apartment, I heard a noise and went inside to investigate.
The cat had gotten up on the counter and tipped over the coffee creamer.
It ran in a river down the countertop.
I don't remember exactly how I reacted that morning, but I'm sure it was frustration because I had a mess to clean up, and angst because I thought I would be out of creamer for my second cup of coffee.
I do remember cleaning up that mess and sighing as I got ready for work that day.
And thinking to myself that it was just one more thing to deal with when there was already too much on my plate.
It's never ending though. The stuff we have to deal with in life.
The little things like cleaning up spills and keeping up with everything that needs to be done around the house.
The big things like doing our best to guide and teach our children, provide for our families and keep them safe, and find time to take care of ourselves along the way.
The hard part is when all of it hits us at once.
The car breaks down, one of our kids gets sick, the water heater springs a leak, we lose our job...
That's when we struggle to maintain perspective.
When life comes crashing down and we feel like we might break, it's not always easy to throw up the white flag and ask for support.
But sometimes that's exactly what we need. Just someone to talk to, to vent with, to listen.
This is a universal struggle.
Life throws crap at us. We either catch it or it falls on the floor and we step in it.
One day, we hit bottom. The next, we're cruising through every green light and belting out our favorite song on the radio.
It's a wild, bumpy, crazy ride.
And sometimes life's a mess.
When the mess is too much, don't be afraid to call in a cleaning crew.
They're worth every penny.
