Smudges

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I've been wearing some form of corrective lenses since the fourth grade.

Glasses, contacts, and now reading glasses on top of those contacts even!

Ah, the joys of getting older.

I have a few different pairs of glasses now, in fun colors and styles.

No matter which pair I choose, they all seem to have smudges on them.

Fingerprints, makeup, dust, who knows where they all come from.

Even if I've just cleaned them, those smudges seem to reappear within minutes.

I've resigned myself to it now. I just take them off and clean them again.

Sort of like how we view life, if you think about it.

We go about our days, with varying degrees of visual clarity.

Some days everything is crystal clear.

But other days, life is clouded by the stuff that "smudges" our view.

The hard times and the worry we feel for our family and friends.

The tough decisions we have to make and the uncertainty we feel.

Or the pain that comes from an unexpected tragedy.

It can be awfully hard to see through those smudges.

And sometimes, trying to clean them only partially works.

So we have to do it again and again.

And again...

Until finally, the smudges disappear.

Life gets steady and stable again for a bit. We feel joy and happiness and contentment.

And then, after awhile, we start to see smudges again.

It's a never-ending cycle, this roller coaster we are on.

A ride that is beautiful, breathtaking, tragic, amazing, painful, heartbreaking, joyous and wonderful all at the same time.

I wonder how life would be if we never had any smudges. If we could see clearly all day, every day.

Do you think we'd get sick of that crystal clear view?

Would we get complacent and take life for granted?

Maybe, just maybe, those smudges are there to add perspective. To help us appreciate the times when the view is clear.

Just don't get so used to them that you forget to clean your lenses once in awhile.

That happens to me sometimes.

The other day, I spent an extra three minutes trying to clean a spot off my counter that wasn't actually there...

Here's to life, and glasses, and the smudges we are perpetually removing from them.

Enjoy the view!
