Smiley Faces in the Snow

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

It's that time of year again in Wisconsin.

Cold and snowy.

I love that we have seasons here. But this one is my least favorite.

I do like the scenery in the winter though. Especially right after it snows.

The air crisp and fresh, the snow on the ground, white and pristine.

But I prefer to enjoy it from the inside of my warm house, cuddled up under a blanket with my cat on my lap.

A few nights ago, it snowed just enough to cover the driveway.

It was 5:30 and pitch black outside when I got home from running errands.

(I definitely don't enjoy that part of winter here.)

I pulled in the driveway and my headlights illuminated footprints in the snow.

Along with tire tracks.

And there was something else.

I parked the car and got out to inspect it.

It was a smiley face. Right there in front of my garage.

My youngest son and his girlfriend were home, and they must have paused to draw them with their feet before going inside.

It made me smile. And forget for just a minute how cold it was outside.

The more life I live, the more I understand that it's the simple things that warm our hearts, even on the coldest days.

The inclination to draw a smiley face in the snow tells me that they are feeling happy.

And that's all I can ask for in life.

For my kids to be happy.

For my family to be healthy.

For a satisfying career that makes me feel purposeful.

For the ability to travel and cultivate amazing friendships.

Sometimes, we get so caught up in the big things that the weight of them feels like it will crush our souls.

Sometimes, life can feel so very cold.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

On those days, I think we should all go out and draw a smiley face in the snow.

Pause and take a minute to smile and be grateful for all of the good stuff in life.

Fill our hearts with warm, happy memories.

And then...

Go inside, curl up under a blanket and wait for spring!

Stay warm, friends!
