It was a frigid, snowy February day.
Exactly six years ago.
I had coerced a large percentage of my family into helping me move into this house.
For pizza and beer, of course!
And a whole new chapter of our lives began.
I know how cliche it sounds to say that I can't believe it's been that long ago already.
But it's true.
It feels like both a lifetime ago and just yesterday, all at the same time.
Six years ago, my boys were 15 and 11.
Only one of them was taller than me.
Neither were driving yet.
They weren't even both teenagers!
So much has happened since we brought those first boxes through this front door.
Lots and lots of good things. Not the least of which has been watching these two grow into the amazing young men they are today.
And a few not so good things too.
We've had some of the most challenging times of our lives living in this house. Times that have changed us and the boys' futures.
I'd like to think that weathering those storms together has made the three of us stronger.
And I'm grateful to this home for being a safe haven through it all.
I look around and precious moments in time flash before me.
In the summertime, both of them in the driveway shooting hoops, or hanging out in the backyard
The echo of teenagers laughing in my basement, punctuated by the smell of pizza baking in the oven
Rushed mornings, grabbing backpacks and running out the door to get to school.
Nights spent playing Phase 10 in the dining room- both of them ganging up on me
A million goodbye hugs (some short and some long) in the kitchen
All of the times they teased me for being such a "mom"
The sounds of life. And laughter. And love.
How long has it been since you've paused to think about all of the life you've lived in your current home?
I think it's important to do that every once in awhile.
It helps us remember just how far we've come and how strong we really are.
But most of all, it reminds us of all we have to be grateful for - the people, the happy moments in life, and even the moments we've struggled through.
So whether you've been in your home six years or sixty, whether it feels like a blip or a lifetime...
I hope you're enjoying the journey.
