I was in the middle of a video call with my boss and three of the other VP's at work.
Suddenly, while I was in mid-sentence, my internet cut out.
So embarrassing!
I tried to reconnect. Checked all of the settings I could think of on my computer.
I ended up using my mobile hotspot so I could keep working.
Then my internet came back on - and it was fine for a while.
Until my next meeting, where the same thing happened.
I got frustrated and submitted an outage report to my internet provider. Can't they just keep things up and running?
After about three rounds of this, I was at my wit's end. I needed things to be stable so I could get my work done!
I scooted my chair back, needing to step away from a desk for a minute.
As I did, my foot brushed against something on the floor.
It was my surge protector.
Something looked off with the cord to my router.
It was only half plugged in!
I looked at the router - no little white light.
I looked at the cord...
And I shook my head as I pushed it firmly into the socket.
The white light on the router started blinking and in a few minutes, I had stable internet again.
I had forgotten the most basic rule of technology.
Make sure the sh*t is plugged in!
What's funny about this is that I've worked in IT most of my career.
I like to think that I am fairly tech-savvy, with a good balance of logic and common sense.
Most days, anyway.
But sometimes I overthink things.
I think most of us do, and not just when it comes to technology.
The challenges we face in life are complicated.
Who would think that a simple solution could solve them?
But sometimes, it's the simple solutions that work the best.
Like a heartfelt hug and time with a friend when we are feeling down.
Or a good night's sleep after a stressful day.
Even simply unplugging once in awhile when we need to reset.
After my connection came back up that day, I pushed that surge protector as far back as I could under my desk.
Away from my feet so I couldn't unplug it again.
And I had to laugh at how my brain wanted to make the situation so much more complicated than reality.
I hope that next time life gets challenging, I'll remember to pause and look for a simple solution first.
More often than not, there's one out there.
