Rubber Bands

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

They hold our hair back.

Keep the wrapping paper and posters rolled up nice and tight.

Organize our cords so they don't look like such a tangled mess.

I have an assortment of them in my junk drawer.

Ready and waiting for a situation that requires something stretchy and versatile.

When I opened my cabinet a few weeks ago and saw a little plastic part fall onto the floor, I was grateful for that stash of rubber bands.

My son took a look at it, figured out the problem and then we ordered a new set of hinges.

We had to wait a couple of days for them to be delivered.

I took one look at that cabinet door just hanging there, wide open.

I knew if we left it hanging open, I'd keep running into it. No matter how hard I would try to remember it was there.

So a trip to the junk drawer was in order, and my son found a rubber band that did the trick.

It stretched from the cabinet handle to the drawer handle. Held that cabinet closed and kept me from injury.

And it made me think.

Once in awhile we need rubber bands in life too.

When our hinges get old and parts start falling off.

Only the rubber bands in our lives aren't made out of rubber.

They are made of the beautiful things in life that hold us together.

Friends who drop everything to drive hundreds of miles to be there when we need them.

Partners who offer their arms for supportive hugs and their ears to really listen.

Family members that make us laugh and remember the "good old days."

Books we read that take us away to different worlds, even for just a little while.

Vacations that offer stunning views and new adventures with people we love.

That's the stuff that keeps us going.

The beautiful, stretchy, not so rubbery bands of life.

May we all have some readily available when we need them.
