Rough Around the Edges

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

As soon as I heard it I knew.

That awful sound of metal spinning in the garbage disposal.

One of my new spoons had fallen in it while I was doing the dishes.

Now damaged beyond repair.

A spoon may not be able to recover from this sort of damage, but we human beings?

That's a whole different story.

We can spend days spinning, getting chopped up from every possible angle.

We fight battles that leave scars.

We have moments that we think will literally break our hearts.

We suffer in silence, because we have to be strong for those we care about.

We wear and tear, but we survive.

A little rough around the edges, but generally still usable.

I spent some time this week thinking about my life and all that has happened in the 46 1/2 years I've existed on this earth.

The good, the bad and the ugly.

My edges are pretty rough.

There's been heartache and pain, loneliness and fear.

Times when it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders, threatening to cave them in.

Once in awhile, I've had to spend some time softening the rough edges. Sitting with them and learning from them until they weren't quite so sharp.

I think that's all part of the process of being human.

There's truth in the saying that if you never have hard times, you don't know how to appreciate the good ones.

Those rough edges we all have are proof of that.

The scars, the wrinkles, the fine lines that we develop as we grow older.

They remind us of the fights we've fought, and the learnings we've taken away from them.

We take pride in the way we've overcome and are grateful for the things that could've been worse.

We find great joy in the beautiful moments that come after some of the strongest storms.

Our rough edges don't have to be sharp like the chopped up edges of that spoon that I recycled this week.

They can teach us so much about our lives.

We can learn and grow and be better because of them.

When did you last take a good look at your rough edges? What can they teach you?

Learn to love the way they shape your life.

After all, you wouldn't be who you are without them.
