Seems like there's a day for everything now, doesn't it?
Especially when it comes to food.
National Corn Chip Day
National Nutella Day
National Taco Day
National Banana Cream Pie Day
I swear. These are real things!
There's a whole calendar of them that you can look up if you're interested.
Sometimes they come up randomly either on social media, or in conversations with my boys.
And every once in awhile a national food day creates a memory for us.
This past Friday, we were having a typical night at home.
The boys doing their thing in their rooms or in the basement and me tidying up the kitchen, taking care of stuff I'd been neglecting around the house all week.
It was shortly after 9 p.m. and I went upstairs to check on Jacob.
Probably to remind him of something he already knew about, but I felt compelled to repeat so he wouldn't forget.
Teenage boys love it when moms do that.
I sat down next to him on his bed and he turned to me and said, "Mom, guess what?"
"What?"
"It's National Root Beer Float Day!"
My first thought was, "that's a silly holiday, who comes up with these things?"
But what came out of my mouth (surprising even me) was, "Let's make some then! Go get your brother and we'll run to Kwik Trip for root beer and ice cream."
He looked at me and smiled. Caught off guard by Mom being such a rebel so late at night I think.
So we all got in the car, both boys and my oldest son's girlfriend, and ran down the road for supplies.
There was a lot of laughter that night while we made the floats. Silly conversations about whether we should use the glass cups or the plastic ones, long spoons or short.
All in all, it was probably 30 minutes from that initial conversation with Jacob in his room to when we settled in with our floats on the living room couches.
But it was a memory that will now last a lifetime.
An ordinary moment that adds to all of the other ordinary moments that make up this extraordinary life.
I could have laughed it off when Jacob told me about that holiday.
I could have left his room to go finish cleaning or whatever other mundane task I had on my list that night.
I'm so glad I didn't, though.
That root beer float was one of the best treats I'd had in a really long time.
And so were the moments with my boys while we made them.
