Red Flags

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

There's work being done on the street in front of my house.

The crews from the city came and put flags all around my yard.

Red ones.

I have to mow around them and that's kind of a pain, but I'm dealing with it.

Every time I see the red flags, it reminds me of dating.

I don't post much about my adventures in dating, out of respect for the people I've dated, and for my boys. And because dating in your 40's is a chaotic hot mess most of the time.

Thankfully, I'm in a solid relationship now and that part of my life is behind me.

Also, I think I'd need a whole different blog to share those stories.

Or maybe I could write another book - with the names changed to protect the innocent, of course.

Anyway...

I was on that dating roller coaster for almost 12 years and went on a lot of dates. I met a lot of really good men on my adventures, and a few that weren't so good.

They all taught me something about myself and what I wanted from life.

It took a few tries, but pretty early on I learned how to spot the red flags.

Sometimes they were easy to see. So obvious on the first date that I found a reason to escape.

In those cases, I mowed around them and left them right where they were.

But sometimes, red flags were harder to spot.

Sometimes, it can take awhile before people show you their true colors.

You can date for months before they show up. And when they do, it can be hard to break away from that budding relationship and heed those red flags.

But you need to pay attention to them.

They're meant to be warning signs.

Danger ahead.

Don't go that way.

For your own good, watch your step and proceed with caution.

In construction and in life.

And especially in dating!
