I signed up for one of those meal kit programs where you get meals delivered to your home.
Thought it would be fun to try something new and take some of the thinking out of dinner.
Because we all know the endless struggle of figuring out what to make.
It's never-ending.
Almost like laundry. Maybe worse than laundry? Depends on the day I guess.
I've never been much of a cook, but I enjoy following a recipe.
There's something almost therapeutic about working my way through a list of steps and watching the meal come together.
Finely chop the onions.
Mince the garlic.
Slice the zucchini into 1/4 inch pieces.
Wash and cut the mushrooms lengthwise.
While I was making this particular recipe, I was jamming to 80's classic rock and dancing around my kitchen.
It was a good day.
Too bad more things in life don't come with recipes.
Wouldn't it be great if we had a recipe for raising children?
Some of the steps are pretty easy, especially when they are little.
Change their diapers.
Wash them when they are dirty.
Feed them when they are hungry.
Hold them when they cry.
Keep them warm.
Smell their heads (that one's my favorite!)
Then they get older, and the ingredients get more complicated.
The steps less clear.
The ratios start to change, based on the size and personality of each individual child.
Sometimes it's a tablespoon of love and a teaspoon of discipline.
Sometimes the other way around.
Sometimes it's a cup of sugar and others a gallon of vinegar.
And the end result almost never looks like the picture.
Yep. Even though it sounds like a good idea, I'm pretty sure having just one recipe for raising kids wouldn't work very well.
It would kind of be like all of us having the same meal every night.
Could you imagine? If all of our kids were raised the exact same way?
With the same measure of love and support, discipline, struggle, disappointment, and challenge?
The same ratio of ideals and expectations for the future?
Sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Or at least a much less interesting life.
We should probably save the recipes for the kitchen.
Let the child-raising continue to be a choose your own adventure.
And savor the results of both in their own amazing ways!
