Pieces

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

My favorite coffee mug.

In pieces.

It had slipped out of my hands when I was taking it out of the dishwasher.

I tried to glue it back together, but it had fractured beyond just the handle.

There were also deep cracks running down the side.

Multiple breaks that made it difficult to repair.

This mug was really special to me.

I had bought it on a trip that literally changed my life.

And now it was in pieces.

My heart was broken too.

Yes, it's just a mug. I know that. And the memories and friends I made on that trip are very much intact.

But when I heard that sound, the cracking of ceramic as it hit the floor, I thought about how life can feel fractured sometimes.

How we can find ourselves faced with challenges where it literally feels like everything is in pieces.

We get divorced and our whole life changes.

Our career takes unexpected twists and turns.

Our children graduate high school and move away.

Those are all hard things. A lot harder than losing a favorite mug for sure.

In my experience, it's important to take a moment to survey the pieces when things break in our lives.

Determine whether we can try to put them back together or whether it's time to let go and move on.

And sometimes, when we are able to put the pieces back together, they end up making something beautiful.

Different for sure...but still beautiful.

I often say that life is a roller coaster. An imperfect, chaotic, sometimes nauseating ride.

But we ride it anyway.

For the people in the car with us, behind us, in front of us, and on the ground below.

Along the way, we shed a few tears for the fractured relationships, the jobs we once loved, the children who are going off to become the adults they are meant to be, and even for our broken mugs that were once filled with more than just coffee.

And we pick up the pieces.

We move on with our lives in a new way. Sometimes even stronger than before.

I think maybe I'll make something out of that broken mug.

Maybe a shadow box with pictures of my favorite memories surrounding a piece or two of it.

Keep just a few pieces of it to treasure forever.

And let go of the rest.
