Overflow

Another Thanksgiving in the books.

It was a good one this year. Smooth and calm and drama-free.

Although Thanksgiving day was calm, the rest of this week was not.

It was a week overflowing with logistics and appointments to be made.

A week where multiple things around the house all of a sudden needed to be repaired or replaced.

But also a great week, full of love, laughter, and smiles.

Tuesday was our semi-annual trip to Chicago to see my son's specialists.

With the holiday week and the never-ending construction, traffic was rough, even mid-morning.

People were in a hurry and I swear I got cut off at least 8 times.

The doctor was an hour late to our afternoon appointment, pushing us later and later to get back on the road home. It ended up being an 11-hour day for us, and I was grateful that we got home in one piece.

We came away from those visits with several new health issues to address and four appointments to schedule with a variety of other specialists and labs.

Wednesday was a whirlwind trying to make all the appointments, compress three days of work into one, and finish the last-minute shopping for the meal I was hosting the next day.

By Wednesday night, I was wiped out. Mentally and physically.

But my boys were both home and I had four days off to enjoy time with family and friends. I was grateful for that.

Thanksgiving Day dawned bright and sunny. The meal was wonderful, our favorite team won the game, and we shared a lot of laughs.

Then life stuff started to overflow.

Our microwave has been getting a bit rusty and on Thursday we noticed a ring of rust under the turntable. We pulled it out of the built-in cabinet and decided it was time to replace it.

Friday, a rag got stuck in our garbage disposal and when I tried to unjam it, I broke the reset button underneath. It sparked and stopped working. Add another appliance to the list to replace.

Saturday, while we were having a wonderful afternoon putting up the Christmas tree and the lights, the toilet in our main floor bathroom clogged and overflowed.

Then, I went to take a picture of the outside lights in the dark and got myself locked out of the house. The garage code wasn't working and after 10 minutes of searching, I couldn't find the hide-a-key (guess we hid it too well!).

I hadn't put on a jacket or even shoes because I was just going out for a quick picture. The boys were gone shopping across town.

I had to call them to come home and let me in. I'm grateful they weren't too far away!

When I got back in the house, with my nearly frozen toes and fingers, I just shook my head.

I thought about how life can bounce between the good and the bad so quickly and easily.

How the moments can flow over and around each other, sometimes maintaining balance, but other times overflowing.

Most days, the overflow isn't too bad.

But sometimes, it can feel like a flood. Especially this time of year when the stress of the holidays is added to the mix.

Somehow though, we manage to mop up the mess.

A new microwave will be here in a couple of weeks.

The garbage disposal arrives on Wednesday and my brother is coming on Saturday to replace it. Added bonus that we'll get to have a nice lunch together.

We eventually got the toilet unclogged and the bathroom cleaned up last night.

A new battery in the garage door keypad should help next time I lock myself out (because you know it will happen again!).

I only have one more appointment to schedule when the clinic is open tomorrow.

All is quiet again today.

The overflow is under control.

I'm grateful for this messy life.

For the laughter and smiles we shared this week, celebrating Thanksgiving and gearing up for Christmas.

And for the overflow of happy moments in the midst of the stressful ones and literal crap.

I hope your week has been overflowing too, with a manageable mix of life, love, and logistics.

Happy Thanksgiving, friends!
