On Your Feet

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

Remember the saying, "On your feet, lose your seat?"

I would get so mad at my brothers when they took the best seat on the couch any time I got up to go to the bathroom or grab a snack.

I can still hear their voices taunting me.

The other day I was at home, relaxing on my couch, enjoying the quiet morning and a hot cup of coffee.

Just me and my cat, Firefly, who was snuggled up next to me.

When I got up to go to the bathroom, she took my spot.

Literally plunked her furry body right into the corner of the couch where I'd been sitting just moments before.

It made me laugh just a little too hard.

And brought back a ton of memories.

Moments in time with my brothers, my cousins, and my aunts as we were growing up.

Images of my boys when they were little, playing and laughing and reaching for hugs.

Trips and parties and events I have attended over the years with amazing friends.

Looking back on my life, that saying hits me a little bit differently now.

Every time I've gotten to my feet, something slipped into the place that I had been in just moments before.

And that moment became a memory.

Sometimes it's a good thing when we get up and lose our seat.

Sometimes we aren't meant to sit there any longer.

Sometimes the next chapter of our lives requires getting up and leaving that place.

But sometimes it would be nice if we could get on our feet for awhile, and then return to find our seat waiting for us, open and available.

And the people we love, in that exact moment in time, waiting there for us too.

Maybe we should break that rule every once in awhile.

I'll start by moving the cat!
