Moving Too Fast

I can always tell when I'm moving too fast.

Little, silly mistakes start to happen.

Nothing that causes too much harm, but enough that it disrupts my day and reminds me that I know better.

For example, several times this week, I forgot to turn the burner on while cooking my breakfast.

I'll pause for a moment while you laugh at me.

Picture this...

I've got 20 minutes before my first meeting of the day and need to make something quickly.

I love egg sandwiches; there's a sentimental tie to those and my dad. Memories that make me smile and wish I was a teenager again.

Anyway, I crack the egg into the pan on the stove.

Then go to the cabinet, grab the bread and put it into the toaster.

Take the cheese and the avocado mash from the fridge.

(Yes, these egg sandwiches are more sophisticated than they used to be, but nostalgic nonetheless).

I've got enough time to assemble that thing and still brush my teeth before my first call!

I stand by the stove, spatula in hand, ready to flip that egg at just the right time so the yolk is still a little bit runny.

I think to myself, "Boy, it's taking a long time for that egg to cook today!"

And then I take another look.

There's no heat under the pan. The dial on the burner is still solidly turned off.

I've now lost 4 minutes of my precious 20 and am dangerously close to having to eat a cold egg sandwich AFTER that first meeting.

I turn the burner on high and shake my head.

Too much going on in my brain at once these days.

I think most of you can relate.

I know I'm not the only one who feels that the earth is spinning faster and faster and the constant stream of information gets more intense every day.

It's hard to force ourselves to slow down.

But what I'm learning lately is that if I don't, I actually lose more time in the end.

I turn that burner on too late and I end up hungry and less focused.

Don't get me wrong, there's a time and a place to move fast.

Like when you are running, or racing a car, or there's an emergency.

But moving too fast all the time can actually make life more difficult.

This week, I'm resolving to pause for just a second during my morning routine.

I'll take a moment to be sure the burner is on before moving to the next step of my process.

Slow down just enough to start my day smoothly.

And give myself the energy and the focus to power through.
