I'm a sucker for silver jewelry.
I love the way it sparkles and contrasts with my skin.
I generally don't wear much though - mostly just necklaces and earrings.
And not the expensive stuff, either.
I tend to leave things behind when I stay overnight in hotels or friends' houses.
So it's better if I don't have anything too valuable that might end up under a couch or bed somewhere.
This is why most of the jewelry I own is worth $10 or less.
I find great deals in all sorts of fun places.
Thrift stores
Garage sales
The clearance section at Target
Even the gift shops at the hospitals we frequent when Jacob needs to see his specialists.
A couple of days ago, we were in Chicago (in the middle of a snowstorm!) having a biopsy done to check on the health of his liver.
While he was in the OR, I took a walk to find some coffee and stretch my legs a bit. It had been a very early morning, and waking up even 10 minutes earlier to make coffee in the hotel wasn't in the cards.
I found a Dunkin' Donuts, got my coffee fix, and then made my way up to the 11th floor.
I wanted to check out the view of the snowstorm and see what their gift shop had to offer.
This time, as I was perusing the goods, I saw a display of beautiful silver necklaces.
And they were on sale - for $9.99!
Score!!
One of them in particular caught my eye. A circular pendant with a silver heart resting on it.
One single word was engraved on that heart.
Love.
My eyes glistened a bit as I admired it and thought about what that word means to me.
The love I have for my son, who's been poked and prodded and through so much the last 3 1/2 years. Some days that feeling can bring me to my knees.
The love I feel for my family and friends and all of the amazing people who support me.
Even the love I have for this complicated life I've been living.
The push and pull of the good and bad, the mountain of decisions and logistics to manage. The fear and worry, gratitude and disappointment.
But at the end of the day, love is what makes it all work.
What makes the world go 'round, as they say.
This necklace, which I am wearing proudly around my neck, symbolizes that for me.
A heart full of love, balancing on this circle of life.
It doesn't matter that I got it on sale at the gift shop at the hospital.
That's actually what makes it even more special.
Because the most meaningful things in life don't have to cost a lot of money.
They just have to speak to your heart.
