A couple weeks ago, the doorknob on my basement door broke.
Ryder was downstairs and couldn't get the door open when he came up.
That doorknob didn't even have a lock on it. But a part inside of it had broken and jammed so the door wouldn't open.
There was a moment of near panic as we figured out what to do.
He ended up having to come out through the storm door from the basement into the backyard.
In order to eventually get the basement door open, he had to unscrew and remove the broken doorknob entirely.
Now I have a door with no doorknob, just a hole where one should be.
I took a picture of the doorknob on the inside door to the garage because I like the style better.
I'll probably buy something similar when I finally get around to replacing it.
Looking at that picture made me think about how many doorknobs are in my house.
Fourteen doors with fourteen doorknobs.
Fourteen doorways to different spaces inside of our home.
Ways to enter or exit.
To escape to a different room when life gets too noisy.
To shut out the world when we occasionally need to.
But what happens if we try to get in or out and the door won't open?
We take for granted that we will always be able to simply turn the knob, open the door and enter or exit freely.
And on those rare occasions when that doesn't happen, the feeling of being trapped is super scary.
But maybe it's a good thing to get locked out once in awhile.
To feel that sense of panic for a few minutes.
And then the sigh of relief when we find our way out (or in).
Like most things in life, being locked out can teach us a lesson.
Maybe we learn that we should hide a key outside.
Or that we should always have a stash of screwdrivers in every room so we can take the doorknob off if it came to that.
Or we simply learn to remember how it feels to have the freedom to open and close all of the doors in our lives, whenever we want.
Maybe I won't replace that doorknob at all to my basement.
Maybe I'll just live with that round hole and let it serve as a reminder of that simple freedom.
But...
Then I'd have thirteen doors with doorknobs and that would be unlucky.
So I guess I'd better replace it.
With a new, shiny doorknob that will allow us to open and close that door securely, and even to lock it behind us.
I'll just make sure we stash a screwdriver nearby in case we need it!
