Awhile back, I wrote a blog about George.
How I inherited him when my dad passed away and he stands guard over the fireplace in my family room.
George moved to a different corner of the room a few weeks ago when my niece and I did some redecorating.
Last weekend, I decked him out for the holidays.
I snapped a pic to share with friends and noticed something about his new position in the room.
The picture hanging on the wall is me and my brother when we were little, dressed in our 70's garb, sporting some pretty cool haircuts.
Instead of standing guard next to the fireplace, George is now standing next to us.
Watching over that little girl and boy who have lived so much life since that picture.
Who have experienced their fair share of hardship and pain.
Who have learned how important it is to own their lives and be good people and have integrity.
Who have been there for each other every step of the way.
Life has taught us a lot.
When I walk into my family room and see George standing there, I think about the lessons he's taught us.
To stand tall and stoic
To hold our heads up high
To shield our hearts, but still let people in
To watch over those we care about
I'm grateful to have him in my home. But even more grateful for what he represents.
My brother and I spent some time together yesterday. He fixed a few things around my house that needed fixing. We shared a nice meal together and caught up on life.
I think about how he's always there for me.
I can always count on him to listen when I need to vent about work and life and the stuff I struggle with. I can always count on him to help if I ever ask for it.
And he'll always, always, tell it like it is, no matter how hard it might be to hear it.
When I walk into my family room, I know I'll always see George there in that corner.
And I know I've always got my brother in my corner too.
There are many people that come and go from our lives who don't add much value.
Today I'm grateful for all of those in my life that do.
During this hectic, chaotic season, don't forget to thank those important people in your lives for being there, and for adding value.
Take a lesson from George.
He may never say a word, but he sure speaks volumes.
