There's a specific pair of tennis shoes I wear when I mow my lawn.
The soles and the tops are stained green from the clippings.
If I do the math, I've probably mowed this lawn 70 times since I bought my house.
Give or take.
Seeing those shoes near the back door makes me smile.
In a world full of chaos and uncertainty, they are something constant.
I may not know how the rest of my day is going to play out, but I know when I mow the lawn, I'm going to wear these shoes.
Sometimes we need to have things like that to be anchors for us.
Little ways for us to take back a bit of control. To reset and recharge.
They can be small things, tiny parts of your day.
Your favorite coffee cup that you drink out of every morning.
The blanket you've had for years that you snuggle up with at night.
That lucky hat that's molded to the shape of your head.
A song that you listen to every morning to kickstart your day.
Those little constants in life that you can trust to be there, to set the world right again when everything's in flux.
There's been more than our share of flux the last few years.
Those things that represent consistency are even more important right now.
Think about where you have them in your life. I bet there are more than you realize.
We're creatures of habit after all.
It's time for me to go mow my lawn, wearing my mowing shoes and my favorite hat, listening to that song that I hear every single day.
But first, I'll finish my coffee.
And by the way... did I ever tell you that this is my favorite coffee cup?
