Lasting Impressions

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

We're in that season.

Of graduations and transitions.

Our kids growing up and going off to the next chapters of their lives as they become adults.

I didn't have a graduate this year, but several of my friends did.

We celebrated at the ballpark where our kids played baseball together for years on the local rec league.

Being there, looking at these boys who are now young men, brought tears to my eyes and a lump in my throat.

I could close my eyes and see them running around this park, on their once little legs, suited up to play ball.

Now they tower over us. Yet they still love to get out onto that field and play like kids.

There are so many great memories of the baseball phase of our lives. Working in the concession stand, cheering like crazy in the bleachers, and staying until it got dark having.drinks in the pavilion.

Oh and don't forget the beefy nachos!

Lots of busy days and long nights. Sun and rain and highs and lows that have left a lasting impression.

There were people there I hadn't seen in several years. Some that I will rarely see again after this latest round of graduates.

Yet, it felt like we were back in time yesterday.

Like we could have all been gathered there for a little league game.

It wasn't only the baseball field that left a lasting impression. It was the people I have met over the years too.

Even the ones that I'd only talked to briefly or met through friends of friends.

There's something about the connections we make through our kids and their activities.

We talked yesterday about how life changes as our kids get older. How friendships evolve as we go through the phases of life.

How sometimes we can go months or even years without seeing or talking to each other.

But when we do reconnect, it's pretty amazing that we can pick back up where we left off like no time has passed.

I'm grateful for the time I've had at this ballpark and with these people.

And for the lasting impressions they've left on me.

I hope I've left some on them, too!
