Keeping It All Together

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I went to the grocery store to buy coffee creamer yesterday.

When I walked out of the grocery store I had two bags of groceries...

But no coffee creamer.

The scissors in my kitchen went missing several days ago.

I have no idea where they ended up. We scoured the house and they have just disappeared.

I lost my sunglasses three times this week. Once they were on top of my head.

My credit card went "missing," and the whole time it was in the back pocket of my jeans (that I was wearing!).

The clock in my dining room is stuck at 1:03 because I keep forgetting to change the battery.

Think it's been that way for over a month now. At least it's right twice a day!

There are a hundred more things like that I could tell you about.

Some days I feel like I can't keep track of anything.

When people compliment me on how organized I am, or how put together my life is, I have to laugh.

I usually think to myself, "If you only knew!"

We try to keep life together as best we can. To remember the endless list of things to do, and to fix all of the stuff that needs fixing.

But it's an impossible feat to do it all. No matter how hard we try.

We are often way too hard on ourselves. It's time to be more compassionate and graceful when it feels like we just can't keep it all together.

So next time you find yourself searching for your sunglasses while they are on top of your head, or your phone while you're holding it, take a moment and laugh about it.

Remind yourself that you are only human.

You don't have to have it all together.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go out and enjoy this sunny day.

As soon as I find my sunglasses...
