Jump Scares

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

It was early in the morning.

The house was mostly dark.

I was putting away laundry that had been sitting in the dryer for a few days.

As I stepped into the family room to drop Ryder's clothes in his pile, something beneath my feet made a loud "pop!"

I nearly jumped out of my skin! Dropped the laundry and screamed even.

Glad none of the kids were up to see me. I'm sure it looked pretty hilarious.

Once my heart stopped pounding, I took a second to survey the floor in front of me.

The source of the noise?

Bubble wrap!

Why would bubble wrap be on the floor in the hallway leading to my family room, you ask?

The answer:

My nearly 21-year-old is home from college for the summer. And he resells clothing online so his packaging materials are everywhere of course!

I hadn't had a scare like that in awhile.

I used to love movies that made me jump. Where the creepy, scary things would suddenly appear out of nowhere, or jump out of a shadowy corner of the room.

I'd sit there, in the theater or on my couch, my hands covering most of my face because I knew it was coming.

Scared for it to happen, but excited at the same time.

I would scream every time, even at the most obvious scares.

Some of you would hate watching movies with me.

Now that I'm older, I don't like the jump scares as much.

I prefer life to be less scary, more smooth and peaceful.

So that morning when the bubble wrap made that terrifying noise beneath my feet, I wasn't prepared for it.

For a few minutes after, my heart was racing.

I had to take a few deep breaths to calm down.

And then I laughed at myself a bit for being afraid of bubble wrap.

And I went on with my day.

This won't be the last time something unexpected happens that jumps out and scares me.

Life is fully of scary things.

But, I've gotten better at anticipating them and knowing that I can handle almost anything that life throws my way.

And I'm really grateful for that wisdom. Wisdom that only comes with age and experience.

From being scared over and over again and surviving.

With each jump scare in life, we get a little bit more resilient.

A little less jumpy. More confident in our ability to power through.

But I think I'd prefer if the bubble wrap was off the ground from now on.

Unless we all want to jump on it on purpose!
