It All Depends on Your Point of View

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I saw it on the way up the hill.

And paused to look back at it when we got to the top.

The street sign read: "Point of View."

Interesting.

And fitting that it can be seen from both directions.

I wondered if the person who put that sign there did it intentionally.

Considering the fact that from one direction, the road went uphill, and was more difficult to travel.

And from the other, it was a nice, easy downhill, where we could gather momentum as we ran.

As I stood on the top of that hill, I thought about how much our point of view can change how we feel and how we live.

And definitely how happy we are.

I write a lot about the positive things that happen in life. My social media posts are generally very upbeat, sharing the things that make me smile.

I've been told before that I'm too positive.

I don't think that's possible.

Just because I focus on the positive, it doesn't mean my life is easy. Or that I don't struggle.

Here are a few of the things I don't typically post about.

  • My son's chronic health issues that come with a steady stream of appointments and logistics and will be a lifelong battle for him

  • The fact that I'm a single woman running a household on one income

  • The days at work where my brain is so exhausted I just want to crawl back into bed

  • The ways my body is fighting against me as I age, the cellulite and weight that appears in places that makes me self-conscious

Being an adult in today's world is hard.

Sometimes it feels like everything is uphill.

Like life is a constant pain in our a** and strain on our hamstrings.

And we could choose to look at it that way. Because it's accurate from one point of view.

But I like to look at it from the other direction.

See the sloping downhill that comes after we make the climb. Where we can pick up the pace and gain momentum.

I make it a point on the tough days to pause and reflect on the good things in my life.

  • The fact that my son is doing well and things are stable and under control

  • That, despite the cellulite and a few extra pounds, my body is healthy and can propel me on runs that are preparing me for my first marathon in November

  • That my job, although mentally challenging, gives me the flexibility and the pay I need to run my household

It helps me keep perspective.

The beautiful thing about life is that we have the freedom to choose.

To look up from the bottom of the hill and dwell on the struggle it will be to get to the top.

Or to look forward to the downhill slope that is waiting for us after we get there.

The days are going to go by regardless of the choice we make.

But one can make us happier than the other.

It all depends on your point of view.
