Impressions

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I love my leaf blower.

It's so much fun to clear the sidewalks and the driveway.

To watch the leaves and grass clippings scatter in my path.

It's the little things, right?

Sometimes, after I clear my sidewalk, I see imperfections in the concrete.

Cracks, grooves, stains from who knows what.

And once in awhile, especially this time of year, there are impressions from the leaves that were stuck to the sidewalk.

Reminders of what was once there in that spot.

We leave impressions in life too.

Like those leaves, we sit in one place for awhile. Settle in, live our lives, make a million decisions, experience joy and heartache along the way.

And leave an impression on all of the people around us.

Many times without even realizing it.

That smile you smiled at the lady in the grocery store? It made her smile too, and she really needed that after a tough day with her kids.

That compliment you gave your coworker? It gave her the boost of confidence she needed to stand up for something she believes in.

The kindness you showed to the waitress at dinner? It helped her power through her shift after dealing with tough customers all day.

That joke you told at the get together with your friends? The one that made them laugh so hard they nearly spit out their drinks? That gave them exactly the stress relief they needed after a busy week.

Even the friends and family you spend time with every day, sharing little moments, creating big memories, all need that too.

It's so easy to take for granted how big the little things really are.

The smiles, the laughs, the random acts of kindness.

They all matter. A lot!

And the lessons you teach the people around you, often without saying a word, leave a lasting impression.

One that will be imprinted on them.

On their brains and in their hearts.

An impression that they'll come across when they are clearing the proverbial leaves of their lives.

And it might just make them smile.
