If Only's and What If's

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

Five and a half hours of driving.

That's what we were faced with on Monday afternoon.

All because I had forgotten my laptop in Door County when we had left there that morning.

It had been such a great weekend, full of beautiful scenery, fun drinks and lots of laughs.

If only....I had walked around the Airbnb one more time. I might have seen it tucked away on that chair in the living room.

What if...we had checked the voicemail early enough before we got out of Door County so we could circle back.

If only. What if.

Those are the thoughts that run through our heads when something goes wrong that we think we should have been able to prevent.

They can cause us to spin so much that they overshadow the memories we just made or the time spent with people we love.

Instead of holding on to the if only's and the what if's, we should focus on what IS.

What is the one thing we can control in that moment?

How we react to it!

We get to choose what happens next.

We have the power to decide whether we sour our entire day because of it or we turn it into something positive.

It was a long drive that night. But we made the most of it.

Listened to a podcast, a great audiobook and learned a lot about each other.

It was actually fun!

Getting to bed at midnight with an 8 am meeting looming wasn't the greatest, but I fell asleep with a smile on my face that night.

And now we have a fun story to tell about our first trip to Door County together.

We can't live our lives worrying about the if only's and the what if's.

The opportunity to change the past doesn't exist.

There is only the ability to choose a more positive future.

If only...

What if...

We all did.
