The first thing you see when you come through my front door is the island that separates the kitchen area from the living room.
There are usually four stools at the counter. Right now, there are only three.
And they all have different fabric on the seat covers.
The one on the far right is what they'll all eventually look like.
Where is the fourth stool you ask?
Well, it's in pieces in my family room of course.
A project half-finished. Well, technically not even half, but you know what I mean.
I'm guessing every single person reading this has a project that's half-finished or not yet started but has been on a list for years.
In this particular case, I'm okay with my bar stools having different upholstery for a bit. In fact, it's a great conversation starter when people come over.
I have all of the materials to finish it - even finally got the right size staples.
For some reason, though, I just don't have the desire to prioritize it.
I'll get to it eventually. Maybe before the end of the year.
Maybe not.
My aunt is shaking her head at me right now. I can hear her.
Sometimes I think those half-finished projects in our lives are a good reminder that everything around us doesn't have to be perfect.
Our true friends and the people who love us don't care. They love what's inside of us, our unfinished, imperfect homes and lives.
That's what makes us interesting. And real.
When my boys sit on those barstools it really doesn't matter what type of fabric they are sitting on. It matters that they are there.
So when I look at those barstools every morning when I come downstairs, I'll keep telling myself it's okay that I haven't finished them yet.
In fact, it's better than okay.
Here's to all of our half-finished projects.
May they remind us of the beauty of this imperfect life.
I'll keep you posted though...
When I finally finish upholstering those barstools you'll be the first to know!
