Good Intentions

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I meant to pick them up between meetings, do a few arm curls.

Fit in a little more strength training in my week.

That's what I told myself about a month ago when I carried my 10-pound hand weights up the stairs and set them down on the floor in my office.

I practically trip over them every morning during the workweek when I sit down in my desk chair.

But guess how many times I've actually picked them up and done arm curls?

Three.

Yep...three.

I had such good intentions. Sigh.

It's funny how some things in life we pick up and make a habit very quickly.

They almost seem effortless.

But then others seem to take a lot longer to stick.

The thing about good intentions, though, is that we can just keep having them.

Every day we can set a new intention. Or remind ourselves of an old one that we want to reboot.

Every day we can start a new habit - maybe even one that changes the entire course of our life.

It's a world of limitless opportunities, a choose your own adventure if you think about it.

I used to love reading those books when I was younger.

It was so exciting to be able to choose, to go down one path first and see what happens.

And then turn back the page and see what would have happened if I would have chosen the other path.

Too bad we can't do that so easily in real life.

At least in real life we aren't constrained to only two choices, which was the case in most of those books.

In real life, we have limitless choices, millions of paths we can take.

I get excited when I think about that.

It makes me want to go upstairs and pick up those weights and do some arm curls.

Take action on more of my good intentions, even the ones that make me work a little harder.

Who knows?

I might just end up a little bit stronger because of it.
