Gifts

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

Christmas is my favorite time of year in so many ways.

But gift buying is not one of them.

Trying to figure out what to get those people who have everything.

Wondering if that family member or friend is going to buy gifts for your kids so you don't know if you should be prepared for gifts for all of theirs.

The clogged aisles at the stores, bumping into other people's carts trying to make your way through.

Wandering around trying to find something that's in your budget but would still make them smile.

It's exhausting.

I do enjoy when I find that perfect gift unexpectedly though.

You know the one.

When you see it on the shelf and it shouts to you that it belongs to your brother, your best friend, your grandfather.

You wrap it and can't wait to see their face when they open it.

Those are the best.

It makes me think about the "what ifs:"

  • What if we were only allowed to give gifts that truly spoke to us like that?

  • What if we stopped frantically shopping at the last minute and choosing something random because we felt like we had to?

  • What if we gifted more of our time and our attention?

  • What if we made more memories instead of messy piles of used wrapping paper?

If these last two years have taught us anything, it's the value of human connection.

I know I'm not the only one who feels the loss of that, the significant changes in our lives that are creating a deficit of hugs and physical touch.

I swear you can die from lack of hugs...or at least it sometimes feels that way!

And I also know that the greatest gift on this entire earth is the gift of life. And the ability to celebrate that life with the people we love.

So this year, my Christmas wish for all of you is to enjoy your gifts.

In all the different shapes and sizes they come.

Especially the ones in human packages.
