Soft.
Warm.
Cozy.
Three of my favorite words. And feelings.
This is the best time of year. A time for sweaters, jeans and boots.
And fuzzy socks.
I have them in multiple styles and colors. Solids, stripes, patterns.
Even a pair that has a face like a dog and little floppy ears.
They are like hugs for my feet.
They make me think about all of the things in life that give me the same feeling.
The wonderful, amazing moments that wrap me in a soft, cozy, warm hug.
A hot cup of coffee first thing in the morning
The smell of wood burning in my fireplace
Hugs from the people I love
Dancing with abandon to my favorite music
Tuesday night cards and pie
Clean sheets and a freshly made bed
A text from a friend at exactly the moment I need it
And wearing my fuzzy socks inside of my fall boots.
It's truly the little things that make our hearts happy.
What's even better is that the patterns or colors of my socks don't have to match my outfit when I'm wearing them inside my boots.
I could have my purple Halloween socks on with a red blouse and no one would know!
This always makes me feel just a little bit sneaky, like I'm getting away with something.
I wrote a blog post not long ago about the things we can't see. The ways that people hide their truth on the surface.
When I'm wearing my fuzzy socks, feet warm and cozy, hidden inside my boots, I think about that.
I hide many things from the world.
The insecurities I feel about my graying hair and aging body
The worry I carry every day for my (nearly adult) children
The stress I hold from my job, from the logistics of life
The loneliness that hits me when the house is too quiet
You can't see these just by looking at me. On the surface, I mostly look like I have it all together.
But they are there, even when my fuzzy socks are hugging me from inside those boots.
It's a curious mix of feelings, this roller coaster of a life, isn't it?
Warm hugs and self-doubt, all wrapped up in one.
This is why we need fuzzy socks, and friends, and danceable music and hot coffee in the morning.
To create balance.
Put on your fuzzy socks this morning, friends.
Feel that warm hug inside your boots.
Let it be a reminder of the little things in life that make you smile.
Even on your coldest days.
And...if you're looking for a Christmas gift for me this year...
I could always use another pair of fuzzy socks!
