Finding Quiet in the Chaos

Updated: 20 hours ago

You know those weeks when there's just too much?

When work is crazy, life is crazy, and everything feels just a bit off-kilter?

Yeah - this week was one of those.

I'm generally pretty good at rising above and keeping calm, finding comfort in the fact that I've been through crazy weeks before.

But this week I struggled. I just couldn't seem to find the quiet in the chaos.

It didn't help that the weather was awful either. Cold and windy, even when the sun managed to come out.

It was a perfect storm of the worst kind.

The funny thing is, there wasn't any one big thing that happened. Just lots of little things that added up.

When life gets like this, sometimes the only thing that works is to tune everything out.

For me, that meant turning on some instrumental music, plugging in my earbuds and getting out for a walk.

Even though it was cold and windy.

I needed to let the calming music wash over me, breathe deeply and reset.

So I bundled up and headed out.

When I turned on my Apple Music app, I found it ironic that the song that came on was called,"Quiet My Head."

Seemed about right.

As I walked, I finally felt my nerves beginning to calm.

By the end of the first mile, with nothing but soothing music and the rhythmic sound of my feet hitting the ground, I started to be able to see things in perspective again.

When life gets overwhelming, we need to find ways to relax our brains and process it all.

This looks different for each of us.

Some of us might need to journal about it, or take a nap, or talk to a friend.

Some need to take some time off of work, or immerse themselves in a hobby that makes them feel purposeful.

And some need calming music and fresh air.

It doesn't really matter how we do it, what's important is that we do.

Life is chaotic and messy sometimes.

There's nothing we can do to prevent that.

But we can be aware of how the chaos affects us, and make sure we have the tools we need to maintain perspective.

Tools that help us quiet our heads when we need it most.

How do you find quiet in the chaos?
