Fast Forward

I finally put my fall and Halloween decorations up last weekend.

Complete with a new fall welcome mat for my front door.

While I was shopping, I couldn't help but notice that the Christmas decorations were already out.

I feel like every year they come out earlier and earlier.

Christmas decorations out by Halloween, with Thanksgiving mixed in. Then Valentine's candy hits the shelves almost before the wrapping from our presents is thrown away.

Easter and Fourth of July a big jumble of holiday soup.

Why do we feel such a need to fast forward life like this?

I remember when we all agreed that there should be no signs of Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving.

When seasons held their place until they were over.

At the risk of sounding old, I liked those times better.

The pace was slower, not so frantic. There wasn't quite so much pressure to be already planning our next holiday.

Life moves at warp speed now.

Monday comes and we sigh at the long week ahead of us.

Then all of a sudden it's Friday and we wonder where the week went.

The weekend is a blip and it's Monday all over again.

Honestly, it can be exhausting.

Holidays give us something to look forward to, a break from the mad rush of life.

I don't think we should fast forward them.

We should savor them, like a nice glass of fine wine.

Take them in slowly. Decorate with passion and enjoy those decorations for as long as we can until the next holiday comes.

Heck - I might just leave my Halloween decorations up until Thanksgiving.

Drink out of these fun wine glasses for a few more weeks.

And rebel against the fast forwarding of life.

Who's with me?
