Everything in Moderation

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

I put a little too much syrup on these mini waffles at breakfast a few weeks ago.

But man, did they taste good!

We went for a long walk after we ate, enjoying a leisurely morning in downtown Milwaukee.

I think sometimes we need to allow ourselves to splurge.

To have too much syrup, to choose fun over work or cleaning or the other stuff that we "have" to do in life.

For me, it's all about moderation. In food, in work and in life.

Too much of a good thing isn't good. But neither is too much of the things in life that don't bring us joy or feed our purpose.

Everything in moderation, as they say.

Have the cheese curds! Then choose something healthy for your meal to balance it out and go for a walk after dinner.

Spend the weekend hitting up the local festivals and dancing your heart away. Leave the dishes and the laundry for a day or two.

Then focus for a few hours cleaning house and catching up. I'm always surprised how quickly I can get through my to do list at home when I crank up the tunes and just do it!

I know people who get so caught up in the stuff they "have" to do that they never make time to do the things that really make them happy. And that makes me sad.

I used to be like that.

It was hard when my boys were little. There seemed to be a never-ending pile of things that I had to do.

Until one day, it hit me.

Who says?

Who says I have to do all these things?

Who says my house has to always be clutter free? Or the kids have to go to every single party they are invited to? Or that I shouldn't take off of work to go on that trip?

Seriously - who says?

When I thought hard about it, I finally really understood that it's all in my control. I can set boundaries and prioritize my life so there isn't too much of any one thing.

Or too little of the things that truly matter.

We need to stop letting perceived obligations get in the way of living our lives, people.

Strike a better balance, make room for the fun and the waffles with too much syrup.

Eat the cheese curds, dance the night away, travel the world. And still be productive and manage our families and our careers.

This might sound impossible to you, but I promise it's not.

Everything in moderation.

It's not just an old saying.

It's a way of life.
