Down to Earth

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

If you look closely at this picture, you'll see that the flag hanging on the light post has three words on it.

Down to earth.

Representative of the little town that I was in for sure.

And also of the way it made me feel walking along the river that day.

Webster's dictionary defines down to earth as "practical" and "unpretentious."

I also consider grounded, easy to talk to, relaxed and level-headed ways that describe it as well.

I think in this world full of chaos and constant streams of information, we should seek out more ways to be down to earth.

Find more people who make us feel grounded and calm.

Do more things that relax us, help us to keep a level head and see the good in the world.

Like taking a walk along the river with a great friend.

Or going on a cruise with your family and not paying to connect to the WiFi.

Or taking a moment between the never-ending list of things to do in your day to just breathe.

Or putting the sh*t that life throws at you in perspective before reacting to it.

Maybe even walking in the backyard barefoot and feeling the grass between your toes.

All of those things can help us stay grounded and calm. And in turn, more practical and less pretentious.

Down to earth.

It's a nice way to be.

Let's all try to get there more often.

Note: Today's blog is inspired by the cruise that I'm currently on with my boys. Just the three of us, escaping for a week and going off the grid while we do it.

Happy Fourth of July, friends!
