To life.
And the ability to wake up another day and breathe.
To the opportunity to learn something new at nearly every turn.
To the capacity to feel all the things we humans can feel.
Happiness, joy, love; even pain, sorrow and fear.
To the people in this world who change us, in small subtle ways that we may not realize for weeks, months, or even years after we've met them.
I say Cheers! to it all.
Even the hard parts.
I'm not saying we have to enjoy the hard parts. Or that we deserve some of the sh*t that life throws our way.
Sometimes it's really hard to think about raising a glass when the dumpster fires are raging around us.
There are days when we might want to throw the glass against the wall and watch it shatter rather than raise it.
Some say that the act of raising a glass, tipping it against another, and saying cheers is a toast to the future. Of things to come.
I like that interpretation.
Because that means to me that during the hard times, we cheers that things will get better.
During the good times, we cheers to continued happiness and success.
And every time, we cheers to the life we are living and the ups and downs of our journeys.
This weekend, I'm raising my glass to a few things (good and not so good):
The snow piling up outside that I'll have to go shovel soon
The Christmas tree and decorations that I finally took down last night
The 7-mile run I completed yesterday in prep for my upcoming half-marathon
The rest and relaxation I've had this weekend that was so desperately needed
The team of specialists who care for my son, for the trust I have in them to set us on a positive course of treatment for the abnormal test results we got back today
My cat, who is sleeping peacefully beside me as I write this. Even though I'm still mad at her for spilling my bottle of coffee creamer all over the kitchen counter and floor
And to all of you reading this. To your lives and the ups and downs that you're experiencing.
I raise my glass to you.
To the future. And all that it has in store for us.
Cheers!
