I thought I had enough time to finish my walk before the rain started.
I was wrong.
A mile from home, no place to go for cover.
I had no choice.
I was going to get wet.
And not just a little wet. Soaked to the bone wet.
It wasn't actually that bad when I stopped to think about it. The rain was warm and the feel of the raindrops hitting my face was oddly soothing.
I reflected while I walked.
I thought about the many ways I could approach this situation.
I could be mad and frustrated the whole walk home.
I could stew about how wet I was getting, how the rain was ruining my hair.
I could get home and be crabby the rest of the evening.
But I chose a different approach.
I made it home, soaking wet, had a good laugh about it, and changed into some dry clothes. I put my hair up in a ponytail and said "screw it" to having a good hair day.
I chose to not let it get to me.
That's hard to do sometimes. I'll be the first to admit that I'm not always as good at it as I was that night.
But if there's one thing I've learned in my life, it's that sometimes we're going to get caught in the rain.
Sometimes we just can't avoid the downpour.
There's nowhere to hide.
We're miles from our destination and have no choice but to put one foot in front of the other if we want to get to where we're going.
And no matter how wet we are, we have a choice when we get there.
We can choose to be upset about the rain.
OR
We can choose to be grateful to be home.
