But First...Coffee

Writer's picture: Michelle L. SmithMichelle L. Smith

One of my favorite coffee cups proclaims: "I Moose Have My Coffee!"

I bought it at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Washington State when I took my boys there in 2014.

The moose reminded me of my dad, who was a huge Rocky and Bullwinkle fan.

As soon as I saw it, I knew it needed to be in my collection.

My mornings always start with coffee. And of course, cream and sugar.

I like my coffee light brown and sweet.

Those of you who are coffee drinkers will understand when I say that sometimes the highlight of my day is a quiet morning with a hot cup of coffee.

It's one of those things that makes me feel centered and peaceful. Especially on a sunny day where the temps are comfortable and the birds are chirping in my backyard while I sit out on the patio.

I blog a lot about ordinary moments.

And how collectively they shape an extraordinary life.

So many of the ordinary moments in my life have involved a cup of coffee.

  • Countless mornings after a fun night out for karaoke, a Halloween party or New Years Eve bash, sharing a cup of coffee and laughs with friends and family

  • Mornings at my aunt and uncle's house in Washington State, drinking coffee and enjoying the view of Mt Rainier from their backyard swing.

  • Sunday mornings with coffee and my laptop, writing this blog and sharing my story

  • Chilly mornings at the campground or in my aunt's backyard, holding my hot cup of coffee, enjoying the quiet as our crew slowly wakes up and gets motivated for the day

  • My favorite coffee cup, filled to the brim, on Christmas morning while I watch my boys open their gifts

Even in the tough moments, there's been coffee.

  • Coffee every morning by the nurses' station last year while we waited for nearly two agonizing weeks before the doctors figured out what was wrong with Jacob

  • Coffee in the waiting room while Ryder had his shoulder surgery

  • Coffee with friends over breakfast while we support each other through parenting challenges, divorce, dating, and all the other sh*t that life throws at us

I'm forever grateful to whoever invented coffee.

And to all of the friends and family who share the love of it with me.

Life can be amazing and breathtakingly beautiful. And it can also be painfully hard.

Every day that we wake up we get to choose how we approach it.

I choose to get my butt out of bed every morning and find the positives in my day.

And to tackle it with confidence and faith in myself.

But first...

COFFEE!
