Bridges

Some are made of concrete and steel.

Sturdy and strong.

Able to hold the weight of a car so we can drive safely across.

Others are made of wood, held together with nails and ropes. Those are the ones that shift beneath our feet.

Some are tall with walls that protect us from the scary view.

Others have no railings and force us to acknowledge the fact that we could easily plunge into the mess underneath.

No matter what they are made of, I love bridges. Even the scary ones.

They're designed to help us cross murky waters, rocky valleys and vast canyons.

To serve as a way to get to the other side so we can experience what comes next in this adventure we call life.

The dangerous terrain we have to cross can be daunting sometimes.

Rocky and rough, full of struggle and decisions and obstacles.

Without a bridge, some of us may never attempt to get there.

I've been on a lot of bridges in my lifetime.

Literal ones like those In our beautiful National Parks, or the giant, awe-inspiring ones that take us across the rivers that separate one state from the next.

Figurative ones like the one I stumbled crossed when I went through my divorce. Where I learned so much about who I am and what I want from life.

Or the bridge I walked (and sometimes ran) across on my journey as a mom.

From raising little ones, to helping them grow as teenagers and then young adults.

Where the expanse below me was so scary sometimes it almost took my breath away.

I think that's been my favorite bridge though.

Because at the end of that particular bridge, there's this amazing sunset.

It wasn't visible a few years ago. When I was in the thick of raising these boys. When life felt like chaos nearly all the time.

But I see it now. Beautiful reds, oranges, and yellows, lighting up the sky.

I see it when I look at them and when they hug me.

I see it in the amazing things they are doing with their lives and the futures they are planning.

And I see it when we have conversations about stuff that really matters. When they are sitting across from me at the table, and I catch a glimpse of the men they are destined to be.

I'm so grateful for that bridge.

And the people who supported me on my journey.

Bridges.

It takes courage to cross them sometimes. What's underneath can be really scary.

But if you keep your eyes forward, and take one step at a time, you'll eventually find yourself on the other side. Often faster than you think.

When you make it across, stop and take a minute to appreciate where you've ended up.

Then look back and marvel at how far you've come.

Be proud of your journey and all you've been through.

And grateful for the bridge that helped you get there.
