Books, Blogs and Batteries

It's interesting how little things can have such a profound impact on life.

Take batteries, for instance.

Lots of our problems can be solved just by changing them.

Clocks and remote controls work again. Smoke alarms are ready to protect us.

They are tiny but powerful.

Our garage door has a keypad on it.

It's been a life saver, especially when neither of the boys were driving and they needed a way to get in the house after school.

For the last few weeks, the keypad had been acting up.

It would take a few tries to get it to work, the lights would blink on and off. Once Jacob couldn't even get in the house so he had to wait outside for over an hour for us to get home.

Today I changed the battery. Keypad is functional again. Problem solved.

One tiny battery makes the difference between my son being in a warm home and him having to sit out on the porch on a chilly, damp night.

Made me think I should be more proactive and change my batteries on some sort of a schedule.

It also made me think about the "batteries" that power our lives.

Not just the garage door openers, remote controls, clocks, watches and smoke alarms, but also the things that charge our spirits, reboot our internal systems, and give us joy in life.

This blog is one of those things for me.

Every week it charges me up just a little bit. Gives me an opportunity to get into my creative zone and share my thoughts with the world.

My book is another one.

When I make the time to write or post about it, I feel my energy level rise.

When I walk into the local bookstore and I see it on the shelf, it lifts my spirits and renews my confidence.

I could name a few others, but I think you get where I'm going here.

For some people, it's playing sports, fishing, or hunting.

Others it's spending time with family and friends.

Or reading, drawing, painting, exploring.

It doesn't even really matter what it is. The important thing is that we make those activities a priority in our lives.

But many days we don't.

We get so caught up in the pressure of life that we forget to do the things that we really enjoy.

It's time to prioritize recharging our own batteries. Even for just a few minutes every day.

I'll set a reminder on my calendar if you will.

Who's with me?
